About Me: I, Prof. Anindya Sinha was graduated in Mining Engineering in 1984 and completed his master’s in Mine Planning & Design in 1986 both from Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad (now IIT-ISM) – as topper of the both Batches. At ISM, I was awarded with a number of prizes/ scholarships including Dhar’s prize, RK Lal’s scholarship, Pickering Medal of MGMI and Gold Medal of ISM. After completion of his Bachelor's Degree, I joined Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a coal producing subsidiary company of CIL (Coal India Limited), where I worked in various posts from Junior Executive Trainee to Manager/ Project Officer in conventional, semi-mechanized and mechanized mines in BCCL (1984-97). I acquired experience in technical and managerial aspects in both underground (UG) and opencast (OC) coal mining. I pursued my doctoral studies under Polish Government Fellowship in University of Science and Technology (AGH), Cracow, Poland (1993-96) under study leave granted by CIL. My research was in mine ventilation and air conditioning of UG coalmines, during which I visited and conducted studies in some of the best longwall mines of Poland. During that period, apart from publishing a number of research papers, I was a co-developer of a mine-ventilation software package under the aegis of Polish Academy of Science (PAN), Cracow. In 1997, I was posted in CMPDIL, a planning & designing subsidiary of CIL, where I worked in underground (UG) mine planning and design in various capacities like Project Associate, Project Leader, Project Coordinator and General Manager (GM). Except for a short tenure in MCL during 2002-03, I served CMPDIL with varied assignments in the capacities of General Manager (GM) (Mining) (2008-12), Regional Director (RI-III) (2012-16), Nodal Officer (CSR & Sustainability) (2013-16) and GM (S&T/Blasting) (2016-17). I was also served as nodal officer for SCCL (Singerani Coal Companies Limited) and NEC (North-Eastern Coalfields) of CIL – looking after their planning related aspects. I am a Recognized Qualified Person (RQP) of Ministry of Coal (MoC) for preparation of Mining Plan/ Project Report and a QCI-NABET accredited EIA Co-ordinator for preparation of EIA/ EMP/ Mine Closure Plans. The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) has conferred me with “Eminent Engineer Award 2017” in the field of Mining. During 2017-20, I was deputed as Project Adviser (a Joint Secretary Level post) in the Ministry of Coal (MoC), selected through USPC, and looking after technical matters of the ministry, like exploration, perspective planning & monitoring of coal & lignite; appraisal of mining projects; capital budgeting; clean coal technology including coal washing, coal gasification, UCG/ SCG, CTL, infrastructure for coal evacuation etc. Additionally, I was appointed as Govt.-nominee Director in CMPDIL (2018-2020), and Chief Nodal Officer (CNO) of SCCL (2018-20). On being selected by PESB, I joined Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a coal producing subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), as Director (Technical) since 30.04.2020, & helped NCL to grow exponentially in terms of Coal/ Overburden production and coal dispatch with due attention towards mechanization, digitization, coal evacuation, environmental management, safety enforcement, coal conservation and research & development. I was also appointed as Director (Personnel), NCL (additional charge) for a spell of 4-months in 2022. I was superannuated on 30.06.2023 from the services of NCL/CIL on attaining 60 years of my age. Post superannuation, I was involved in Trans-mine research project titled “Transition of Coal Mining Communities to Sustainable Lives and Livelihoods (Trans-Mine)” in Ashoka Centre for a People-centric Energy Transition (ACPET) (Center created under aegis of International Foundation for Research and Education (IFRE), New Delhi) as Advisor (2023-24). Later, on being selected, I joined IIT(ISM), Dhanbad as Professor of Practice in the Department of Mining Engineering since May 2024. Additionally, I was appointed as Consultant to the Ministry of Coal for evaluation and monitoring of its all Central Sector Scheme (CSS) R&D projects since July 2024. The Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI) has conferred me with “MGMI Award of Excellence for Coal Mining (2023-24)” for outstanding contribution in the Coal Mining Industry. I had represented CIL & MoC on various Committees/ working groups related to coal development and visited a number of countries including Poland, Spain, Switzerland & Mongolia in relation to professional work. I have contributed a number of technical papers (41 nos.) on policy and issues in coal sector in various National & International Forums and am a life member of various professional bodies viz. MGMI, IEI, IMMA. My work coupled with my academic accolades and pursuit for continual knowledge & skill updation, and more than 40-years of mining experience in all spheres of Coal Sector helped me to build a proud career graph for myself.

Research Interest: 1. Coal mining and related sub-system design, 2. Mine mechanization and digitization, 3. Mine ventilation and air conditioning, 4. Mine environment and climatic control, 5. Mine repurposing and mine closure.

Teaching

1. Assisting faculty as doctoral student at University of Mining and Metallurgy (AGH), Krakow, Poland during 1993-96.

2. Visiting faculty for different training institutes of Coal India Limited (CIL) since 2001-2017 viz.
