About Me: Dr. Sowmiya Chawla graduated in 2005 from St. Xavier’s College of Engineering under Anna University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu and then received her M.E Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering in 2007 from College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University, Chennai, and Ph.D. degree from IIT Delhi in 2013. After her masters she worked as a Sr. Graduate Engineer (Projects), DLF Projects Ltd., Gurgaon, till 2008. After her Ph.D, she also worked as a Research Associate, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Delhi, and Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Ch. B.P. Govt. Engineering College, Delhi as a Guest Faculty in 2014. She joined IIT (ISM) Dhanbad as Assistant Professor in 2014 and is Associate Professor since 2022. Dr. Sowmiya’s research interests include Geotechnology for roads and railway tracks and ground improvement Reinforced walls and slopes, Numerical modelling of Soil Behaviour, Discrete Element Method and Geosynthetic applications. Her thesis deals with the current problem of Indian Railways, which bear huge economic losses due to constant maintenance of railroad tracks on account of subgrade shear failures and mud pumping problems on clayey subgrades. The work was fully industry oriented and relevant to the present day needs of Indian railways to increase the transportation efficiency by running heavier, longer and faster trains. The work embodied in her thesis was a part of a Department of Science and Technology (DST) Project entitled “Experimental Investigations and Analysis of Geosynthetics Reinforced Railway Tracks Laid on Clayey Subgrade”. Dr. Sowmiya’s pioneering contributions to geotechnical and railway engineering have been acknowledged through numerous national and international accolades, including the ‘IEI Young Engineers Award (Civil Engineering)’ Award from Institution of Engineers, India, ‘Young Geotechnical Engineer Award’ for best paper on Solutions of Problematic Soils from Indian Geotechnical Society-Chennai Chapter, India, ‘Outstanding woman in Engineering (major area of study – Civil Engineering)’ Award from Venus International Foundation, India etc. Her outstanding contributions to Transportation Geotechnics and Ground Improvement Techniques for existing Railway Tracks have been recognised in National and International level. The research works have recognised as Best Paper Award from International Symposium on Lowland Technology, Japan, Best Paper Award in the field of Ground Improvement in Transportation Infrastructure from Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Geotechnical Science and Engineering, Australia. Also, her research group have begged several prestigious awards, including the best paper on “Computational Geomechanics”. IGS-Delhi Chapter YGE Award, best paper on “Ground Improvement''. IGS-Baroda Chapter YGE Award, IGS-Kolkata Chapter YGE Award, best paper on “Earth Retaining Structures”. Dr. Sowmiya Chawla is the honorary secretary of Indian Geotechnical Society, Dhanbad Chapter.
