The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the leading departments of Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad started in 1999. It plays a pivotal role in contributing to the engineering science curriculum, and over the last 26 years, industrial interactions and emphasis on applied engineering and research has increased significantly. With one of the highest faculty strength of 45 in the institute, the department offers degrees at all levels: a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering and Mining Machinery Engineering, a Master of Technology in Mechanical Engineering, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Faculty members of the department have guided more than 200 PhD students so far, demonstrating a track record of garnering collaboration with academia (national and international) and industry.
Our experienced faculty members stay active across various research domains through sponsored research, consultancy, as well as through membership and appointment in professional societies. Some of the areas of research include microfluidics, aero-acoustics, bubble dynamics, biomechanics, robotics, renewable energy, high performance computing, tribology, refrigeration, CFD, fluid-structure interactions, turbomachinery, modern-manufacturing, fluid power, mining machinery along with conventional thermal engineering and machine design. Students of the department are associated with Robotics club, Smart manufacturing, ASME students’ chapter and other professional bodies. The UG and PG students of the department are associated with national and international sponsored research and consultancy projects, with a good number completing research internships abroad.
Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. Starting our journey in 1999, we have grown in our expertise in the core curriculum and research of Mechanical Engineering. We have a strong undergraduate program in mechanical and mining machinery engineering and postgraduate program in mechanical engineering, with over 1100 sanctioned student strength, inclusive of more than 200 PhD scholars. Several sponsored candidates from industry and research laboratories carry out their postgraduate studies in the department. We also host several postdoctoral fellows.
Our department is active in research in the broad domains of solid mechanics and design, fluid and thermal sciences, manufacturing sciences, and robotics and automation. We have a distinguished record in teaching and research with faculty members having excellent academic credentials. Several faculty members serve on editorial boards of national and international journals, review technical articels for journals on regular basis, and organize international symposium and conferences.
This website provides an overview of academic programs, research activities of the department, research facilities, profiles of faculty, and student activities. We hope that this is useful for prospective undergraduate or graduate students, industrial partners, academic partners, and visitors. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information.
